There’s a little whispering behind the scenes at the statehouse about a proposed porn tax. The idea is to tax pornography sold in Iowa at a 20 percent rate. That hefty tax hike would apply to anything sold in a store that doesn’t allow minors to buy their wares. Key legislators say they’ve had contact from a few folks who oppose the porn tax, but nothing on the record. And a check of lobbyist records shows no person or group has signed up to lobby for or against the tax. Representative Jamie Van Fossen — the chairman of the House tax-writing committee — says it shows people who buy porn are reluctant to speak out publicly.
