A new study of breast cancer survivors will focus on their sisters. Kerry Finnegan with the Iowa chapter of the American Cancer Society says the researchers are picking up on the strong genetic link to the disease. She says there’s a link between familiy history and breast cancer, and women whose sister or mother had the disease are at increased risk, whereas someone without a strong family history may not have such a great chance of getting cancer. The American Cancer Society’s promoting what’s being called a “Sister Study,” looking to enroll women age 35 to 74 whose mother or sister had breast cancer and follow 50-thousand women for at least ten years. Finnegan says its large scope will provide valuable information. Information will be collected about genes as well as lifestyle and health factors that’ll help researchers understand the link better. For more information or to learn if you could enroll in the study, check the society’s website at www-cancer-dot-org.
