3A teams ready to take the field in quarterfinals

November 9, 2004 By admin

In the class 3A quarterfinal round a pair of district eight rivals meet for the second time this season as top rated Harlan visits number- eight Denison-Schleswig. Harlan won the week seven matchup 28-0. Clear Lake and Waukee match up in a Class 3A quarterfinal round game tonight in Waukee. The Lions bounced back from a week nine loss to Iowa Falls-Alden to beat Winterset 14-0 in the first round of the playoffs. Clear Lake coach Fred Wieck says his team responded well after leading rusher Matt Scribbins possibly ended his season with a broken arm. He says they were diappointed after the injury as Scribbins is a real leader, but he says he’s not surprised that the team responded.Seventh ranked Waukee bounced back from a 5-4 record last year and made the playoffs for the first time in school history by running the table in 3A District 7, then beating Boone last week 34-20. Waukee coach Scott Carlson says their fans are excited to have a playoff contender. He says it’s been a great experience for the community which he says is unique because of the way the community is spread out over a big area with several zip codes.Carlson’s squad is led by a balanced offensive attack with quarterback Tim Getting passing for over 17-hundred yards…while running back Aaron Wies has rolled up 16-hundred-50 yards in the season, including 316 yards and four touchdowns last week against Boone. He says Wies isn’t a big guy, but has above average speed and he has a lot of desire and loves to play the game. For Waukee, it’s their first appearance in the playoffs…this is Clear Lake’s seventh straight trip to the quarterfinals and their tenth playoff appearance overall.
