Defending champ Emmetsburg ousted in 2A

November 10, 2004 By admin

The quarterfinal round of the state high school football playoffs wrapped up last night and there will be a new champion in class 2A. Eighth ranked West Lyon used a late touchdown to beat third rated and defending champion Emmetsburg 14-7. There was no score at the half, and then things got windy, making it tougher. Emmetsburg scored first, but a bad punt let West Lyon tie it up at 7-7. West Lyon scored again with 44 seconds to go in the game after another bad punt. In class 3A, sixth-ranked Fairfield avenged a regular season loss to number-three Chariton. The Trojans scored in the third quarter after a roughing the punter penalty kept a drive alive. Fairfield scored again on a Dustin Curts 45-yard touchdown run after they had stopped Chariton on a fourth down try to give them the final margin 17-6.
