A Harlan Community High School student looks forward to a year of public appearances ahead as the new Miss Iowa Teen U-S-A. 16-year-old Jocelyn Borkowski says she’s been competing in pageants since she was five-years-old. Borkowski says she’s always enjoyed dressing up, wearing fancy shoes and getting her hair done. She says she didn’t have to do much to prepare for this latest contest, held over Thanksgiving weekend in Cedar Rapids. Borkowski says she did have to “tone up” to look good in a swim suit and talked to lots of people to brush up on her people skills. She says the “behind-the-scenes” relationships between the girls in the contest wasn’t as tense as some people may think it is, based on movies like “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” The next contest for Borkowski will be in August of 2005, when she competes for Miss Teen U-S-A. Her duties as Miss Teen Iowa start this weekend with an appearance at a children’s hospital in eastern Iowa. Also last weekend, a new Miss Iowa U-S-A was crowned — 24-year-old Joy Robinson of Altoona.
