Newton woman charged with stealing lottery tickets

January 14, 2005 By admin

A central Iowa woman allegedly gambled with her job at the grocery store — and lost. A Hy-Vee employee in Newton is accused of stealing more than 35-thousand dollars worth of Iowa Lottery tickets over several months. 32-year-old Melanie Wyss of Newton is charged with first-degree theft. Police say Wyss was in charge of servicing the pull-tab ticket machine and the store manager says he saw Wyss take more than 300 tickets and pay herself the winnings from Hy-Vee funds. Store officials say they have no way to tabulate the winnings she allegedly took because of the random nature of the lottery system.
