Brushfire causes brief I-80 shutdown

April 9, 2005 By admin

Interstate-80 in eastern Iowa was closed for a time Friday afternoon, after a brushfire sent thick smoke across the highway, cutting visibility and sparking a chain-reaction crash in the eastbound lanes. Peggy Broehmer of Charlotte was there. She says a couple ofsemis were involved and some cars, and traffic was backed up for five miles or more. Still, some of the frustrated passersby found ways to pass the time. Broehmer says among the people standing around were a busload of cheerleaders, waving at people going by.
