Black Hawk County health officials confirm a case of the potential-killer disease bacterial meningitis is diagnosed in a 43-year old Waterloo-area man. His name and condition are not being released. County health department director Tom O’Rourke hopes there’s only the one case. O’Rourke says the patient is still hospitalized and no additional cases have been found, at least not yet. O’Rourke says people who’ve come in close contact with the man have been contacted and those who needed treatment or examination were referred to their own doctors. He says this form of meningitis is very serious. O’Rourke says symptoms of the potentially-fatal disease include: fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash and a stiff neck. The main treatment for bacterial meningitis is antibiotics.
