Two die in Southwest Iowa accident

June 17, 2005 By admin

A woman and a child were killed, and two other people were hurt, in a head-on crash this morning in southwest Iowa’s Adair County. The Iowa State Patrol says a vehicle carrying the unidentified woman and child was westbound on Interstate 80, when for reasons unknown, the car crossed the median about a mile west of the Dexter exit, and crashed head-on into an eastbound semi driven by 59-year old Jim Stires, of Salina, Kansas. Stires was taken by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. A passenger in the semi — 57-year old Robert W. Hart, of Manhattan, Kansas — was also taken to Mercy Hospital. Troopers aren’t sure if any of the victims were wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred shortly after two o’clock this morning. The names of the dead are being withheld pending notification of relatives. The accident remains under investigation.
