Science center focuses on crime scene investigation

September 17, 2005 By admin

It’s C-S-I at the S-C-I. The Science Center of Iowa is featuring a special workshop today (Saturday) that’s focused on crime scene investigation. Science Center spokeswoman Sally Dix says guest experts will talk about how they match up fingerprints and identify hair and clothing fibers using micro-technology. Dix says they’ll talk about the sorts of things investigators look for when they go to a crime scene. A Des Moines Fire Department investigation team will also explain how they’re able to go into destroyed buildings and extract important evidence. Other speakers will be from the Des Moines Police Department and a criminal science professor from Simpson College. Dix says people will see elementary demonstrations of how D-N-A evidence is gathered and used in criminal investigations — but using things like onions, bananas and strawberry smoothies.
