Graceland goes from 0-10 to playoffs

November 18, 2005 By admin

Three years ago the Graceland football team was 0-10 but this week the Yellowjackets prepare for their first-ever NAIA playoff game when they play Tabor College of Kansas. Third year coach Chris Welch has led a turnaround that was completed last weekend with a 37-16 win over ninth-ranked Mid-American Nazarene for their first Heart of America Conference title since 1975. He says the students stormed the field and tore down the goalpost after the game and threw it into a nearby lake.Graceland just missed a playoff bid in 2004 and the post-season was a goal for this team coming into 2005. Tabor leads the country in scoring at over 42 points per game but Welch likes trhe way his defense has performed against a demanding schedule. He says six teams in the conference were in the top 25, so he says they’ve been tested every week.Graceland is ranked 12th. The game will be played at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.
