A former Iowa woman’s pleaded guilty to killing her newborn baby, whose body was found in a dump. Wheeling a garbage can to the end of the driveway one cold night in February 2004, Lori Schultz says she heard a baby whimper, but didn’t dare take the newborn out of the trash. She’d been thrown out of the Air Force for getting pregnant and told the judge she didn’t know what the reaction might be from the boyfriend she was living with the night she gave birth at home and wrapped the baby boy in towels and a rug. After the story began to come out, searchers spent weeks combing a Nebraska landfill and found the tiny body on April 5. Schultz was arrested more than a year later and released to live with her parents in Merril, 15 miles north of Sioux City. Her guilty plea to second-degree manslaughter came just three weeks before her trial was to begin. Schultz will be sentenced February 28.
