Number one Davenport Assumption falls in 2-A girls’ tourney

March 7, 2006 By admin

The class 2A quarterfinal round ended with a stunning upset. Kati Jo Christensen had 28 points as unranked Audubon shocked top rated Davenport Assumption 72-66. Christensen said the Wheelers got some help preparing for Assumption’s full court press by playing against the varsity boys team. She says they knew they had to get used to the size of the other team.

Christensen said they wanted to be aggressive against the press. She says they’ve been a run-and-gun team all season long and they wanted to beat Assumption off the press.

Audubon coach Derek Sonderland says his team was confident despite being considered an underdog. He says they talked about what they would have to do to play with them and have a chance to win. Sonderland says they did what they needed to and were focused and understood what they needed to do.

The Wheelers take a 20-6 record into the semifinals. Assumption closes out the season 24-2.
