Simpson hopes to contend again in the Iowa Conference

August 24, 2006 By admin

After slipping to a disappointing 5-5 record a year ago the Simpson College football team looks to move back into contention in the Iowa Conference race this season. The Storm ranked second in the conference on defense in 2005 and coach Jay Niemann has high hopes for that unit this season as he has several starters back.

Eliminating turnovers is a big goal for this season. The Simpson offense committed 26 turnovers in 2005 and the Storm finished a minus one in that category. Niemann says they’ve talked about it and drilled it and they’ll only find out if that worked during the game.

Niemann felt the Storm need to run the ball better and during the off-season made some changes to the spread offense. Last year’s league race featured a lot of balance and a large number of close games. Niemann expects the same thing this year. The Storm open the season September second at Concordia of Wisconsin.
