U-N-I, Iowa men, I-S-U women win in basketball

December 21, 2006 By admin

The U-N-I Panthers used the long ball to beat Wartburg 83-61. The Panthers tied a school record with 15 three-pointers. Adam Viet came off the bench to make five of seven 3’s for a team high 16 points for U-N-I.

The Iowa Hawkeyes bounced back with a convincing victory over Georgia State. Adam Haluska poured in a career high 36 points and the Hawkeyes took command with a 17-4 run midway through the opening half enroute to a 101-59 win. Iowa coach Steve Alford says it was a good win as Georgia State just about beat Hofstra. Alford says they are nowhere near where they want to be yet.

Alford says it was a complete effort by the Hawkeyes as they improved in both halves. He says they did a better job of rebounding and getting the free-throw line and sharing the basketball. Iowa improves to 6-6 on the season.

The Iowa State women survived cold shooting to hold off Illinois State 74-67 in Ames. I-S-U coach Bill Fennelly who says it was a hard fought game and he’s proud of the effort of the team. The Cyclones trailed 59-57 with just under eight minutes to go. Fenelly says they didn’t panic and kept their turnovers down. He says they rebounded well, they just didn’t shoot the ball well.
