Iowa monk hit by train has past problems

February 7, 2007 By admin

The Iowa Catholic monk who was hit by a train in Elkhorn, Nebraska, Tuesday had spent time behind bars.

Brother Patrick Harris has quite a history. In 1977, he spent five years behind bars after suffocating his three-year-old daughter.

Eleven years ago, Harris jointed the Benedictine Order in Des Moines. He was in the Omaha suburb of Elkhorn for a meeting, and had been staying at the Mount Michael Abbey there when he deliberately stepped in front of an oncoming train. He fell between the rails and the train went over him.

Harris suffered head injuries but will be okay. Authorities say they found a note in his car stating Harris was trying to kill himself.
