Lansing coach adds another baseball milestone

June 21, 2007 By admin

The nation’s winningest high school baseball coach reached another milestone this week. Lansing Kee’s Gene Schultz picked up career win number 1,500 when his Hawks beat Clayton Ridge 19-7 on Tuesday night. The 61-year-old Schultz has coached at the school for 38 seasons and during that span the Hawks have won 11 state championships.

Schultz says it’s a credit to "a great number of boys who have gone through the school." He says there’s also been great support from the school board and administration. Schultz says it doesn’t seem like he’s been coaching that long because it has been enjoyable.

Schultz never imagined he would coach for this long when he first started. Schultz says he figured on a few years to see what would happen.
