New UNI softball coach says baseball experience will help

June 27, 2007 By admin

Ryan Jacobs says there are more similarities than differences between coaching baseball and softball. The former UNI baseball player and assistant coach is the Panther’s new softball coach. He is currently the head coach at Cedar Falls High School.

Jacobs says the fundamentals are identical when it comes to throwing, catching and hitting. Jacobs says he will hire a staff that has experience in pitching at the college level. UNI athletic teams have been successful in recruiting and winning with Iowa natives. Jacobs wants softball to join that list.

Jacobs says he’s seen the quality players in Iowa and thinks some of them get overlooked. He says they’ll have the opportunity to give some of those players the chance to develop.

Jacobs will finish the season at Cedar Falls before taking over the UNI program.
