Funeral set for murdered Army nurse

July 25, 2008 By admin

A murdered Army nurse who was originally from Iowa will be buried here next week. The body of 24-year-old Holley Wimunc, an Army nurse at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, is being returned to Iowa for a funeral in her hometown of Dubuque.

Wimunc’s body was found last week in a wooded area in a shallow grave near the Camp Lejeune Marine base. Her apartment in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was burned, and her estranged husband, 23-year-old Marine corporal John Wimunc, is charged in her death. Another Marine is charged with helping John Wimunc commit the crime.

Wimunc attended Dubuque Hempstead High School and earned a nursing degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport. She leaves behind a son and a daughter. Wimunc’s funeral will be Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. Raphael in Dubuque.
