During the pursuit, a Buchanan County deputy sheriff was seriously injured when his patrol car ran off the road at a T-intersection and crashed into a ditch. Forty-two-year-old Joseph Schwinghammer of Independence was taken to University Hospitals by air-ambulance.

The charges against Hackert include eluding a police officer, two counts of assaulting a police officer with a dangerous weapon, assault causing bodily injury, simple assault and 18 miscellaneous traffic citations. Hackert’s vehicle was recovered in a grove of trees in rural Lyon County.
