Council Bluffs teen charged in fatal crash

September 3, 2009 By admin

Charges have been filed against a Council Bluffs teen following a fatal crash late last month on Interstate 80 in Pottawattamie County. Nineteeen-year-old Christopher Kopelciw was arrested Wednesday morning on a "suspicion of motor vehicular homicide" charge, a felony punishable by up to 10-years in prison.

The charge is the result of an investigation into the August 24th crash that killed 53-year old Adam Burk of Carter Lake. Burk was pronounced dead after his car was struck from the rear on westbound Interstate 80 near the Interstate 29 southbound split. A witness told investigators a car driven by Kopelciw was driving in excess of 100 m.p.h. and swerving in and out of traffic before hitting Burk’s vehicle.

Kopelciw and his two passengers, 19-year olds Skyler Archer and Michael Montgomery — both of Council Bluffs, suffered minor injuries in the crash. Kopelciw is being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail on $25,000 bond.
