ELC uses defense to advance to the 2A title game

March 3, 2011 By Todd Kimm

Estherville-Lincoln Central has ridden a strong defense all the way to the class 2A title game. The Midgettes held second ranked Roland-Story to just two points total in the second a third quarters in a 36-24 win.

E-L-C coach Brad Leonard says they did a nice job with their post defense and keeping Roland-Story off the boards and that was the key to the win. After scoring 11 points in the first quarter Roland-Story only scored 13 the rest of the game.

Leonard says they knew if they allowed them to come down and run their offensive sets, they would be in trouble, so their plan was to come up and make them scramble the whole game and they were able to do that.

Senior standout Maddie Oliver had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Roland-Story. Oliver choked back tears as she said she’s been fortunate to play with a lot of really good players and be coached by a lot of really good players. “I mean it sucks right now, but that’s life,” Oliver said of the loss.

Emily Kirchner led the Midgettes with 12 points as they take a 23-4 record into Friday’s 2A title game.
