Cedar Falls man charged with killing toddler son

May 17, 2011 By Matt Kelley

The father of a toddler who died at a Cedar Falls motel in April is now facing a charge of first-degree murder. The case involves 18-month-old Kaleb Reddout, who died April 4 at the Midway Studios Motel.

Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson says it appears the child was choked to death. An autopsy shows the death was caused by asphyxia. Olson says the boy’s father, 23-year-old Daniel Reddout of Waterloo, was arrested on Monday. Reddout and some of his friends were at the motel at the time of Kaleb’s death.

“As we continued to investigate and talk to different people, we eventually finally got (Reddout) to admit that – in an attempt to get Kaleb to sleep – he cut off his airway and that’s what caused the child’s death,” Olson said. Reddout is being held in the Black Hawk County Jail.

At his initial court appearance this morning, Reddout’s bond was set at $1 million.
