Arrangements set for Rockford soldier

August 15, 2011 By Matt Kelley

Services are set for a northern Iowa resident who was among the 30 American troops killed earlier this month when a helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. The funeral for U.S. Navy Petty Officer Jon Tumilson is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School Gymnasium in Rockford.

The 35-year-old Tumilson was a 1995 graduate of Rockford High School. He joined the Navy after graduation. Tumilson was one of 22 Navy SEALS and eight other U.S. soldiers who died on August 6th when their helicopter was hit by a Taliban rocket-propelled grenade. It’s the deadliest single incident for American forces since the Afgan war began. Tumilson is survived by his parents, two sisters and six nieces and nephews.

Memorial arrangements are being handled by the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Online condolences for the family can be posted at: www.hauserfh.com.
