Child dies in Waterloo boat accident

August 18, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A nine-year-old member of the Waterhawks Ski Club has died in a boating accident near Waterloo. Emergency crews were called to Eagle Lake around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon. Evansdale police say a boy and two others fell while skiing behind a boat.

They were waiting in the water for the boat to come pick them up, but the boat’s driver thought that they had swam to shore and didn’t see them. That’s when one of the boys was reportedly struck by the propeller of the boat. He was taken to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo where he later died.

The boy’s name is being withheld pending notification of relatives. Evansdale Police Chief Randy Weber says the situation is being handled as an accident and no charges are expected.
