Police say deaths of Indianola mother and son were a murder/suicide

March 26, 2012 By Matt Kelley

Authorities in central Iowa say a young mother killed her toddler son and herself. Indianola police got a call Saturday from the estranged husband of 23-year-old Kelli Sly.

The couple had traded text messages about the custody arrangement for their two-year-old boy, Gavin. Tim Sly told police he was worried about Kelli harming herself.

Officers met with the woman at her apartment. She assured them she wasn’t suicidal, just angry at her husband. On Sunday morning, police say it appears she intentionally drove her car into a bridge pillar in Des Moines, killing herself. Police later found the boy’s body in her Indianola apartment.

They won’t say how he was killed but do say the mother was responsible for the death.
