Young boy found in Ankeny apartment alongside dead dad

May 24, 2012 By O. Kay Henderson

A four-year-old boy apparently was on his own in a central Iowa apartment for a few days this week — after his father died. The child’s grandfather called the landlord of the apartment in Ankeny and asked that someone check on his son and grandson.

The boy answered the door at about 3:15 Wednesday afternoon and told the landlord his dad was sleeping, but the child’s father was dead, apparently of natural causes. Family members say they hadn’t heard from 40-year-old Ray Calhoun since Sunday.

Ankeny police say they may never know when Calhoun died and how long the boy had been alone in the apartment. The boy is fine and staying with other relatives.
