Des Moines student becomes ill from synthetic drug

August 23, 2012 By Matt Kelley

A central Iowa high school student was rushed to a hospital this morning after possibly experimenting with a dangerous marijuana-like substance. It happened outside Des Moines East High School.

Des Moines Public Schools spokesperson Phil Roeder says three students were spotted outside the school by a neighbor, who called the school after noticing one of the students fell to the ground. The teen suffered a reaction from a synthetic drug.

Roeder says the substance is being tested, but it’s believed to be K2 or a K2 like substance. The teen who was hospitalized has since been released and is said to be doing fine. The other two teens did not require treatment.

“Obviously, all three students are going to be facing some type of discipline which could be suspension all the way up to expulsion, possibly,” Roeder said. The student’s names are not being released.
