North Liberty man charged with vehicular homicide

September 7, 2012 By Matt Kelley

A 19-year-old North Liberty man has been charged in connection with a fatal accident near Tiffin last year. Zachary Swenka was arrested on Thursday and charged with vehicular homicide.

On October 17 of last year, Swenka was driving a car that crossed the center line on Highway 6 and ran head-on into a van. Fourteen-year-old Mackenzie Lown of Amana was killed in the crash. She was one of five teenagers who were passengers in Swenka’s car.

A report from the Iowa State Patrol claims Swenka was driving more than 100 miles per hour at the time. The crash happened about a mile away from Clear Creek Amana High School.
