Football playoffs enter second round

October 29, 2012 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Class 2A top ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley will be at home to play Garner-Hayfield/Ventra. The Nighthawks improved to 10-0 with a first round win over Clarion-Goldfield while the Cardinals top Central Lyon/George-Little Rock in the first round to move to 7-3.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley coach Cory Brandt who says the Cardinals feature power football on offense that is physical and gave them a lot of trouble in the last game of the season.

Brandt says they run mainly out of the power I and try to line up and run you over with a big line and big backs. Brandt says Garner-Hayfield employs an aggressive style on defense where they are aggressive in bringing their linebackers.

In class 2A, second ranked Mediapolis will be at home against West Liberty. Mediapolis Brian Borrison says West Liberty quarterback Tyler Newsom is a concern for his defense.

He says they are a big physical team with playmakers like Newsom, who he says is dangerous when he gets outside the pocket. It will be the second meeting of the season after Mediapolis beat West Liberty 56-21 one month ago.

Borrison says that does help as they have film on them from the last time they played and have an idea of what they may do. Borrison says both teams will make adjustments based on the first game, as he says there will be some of the same things, but teams adjust as the season goes on.

Class 2A sixth ranked Union will be at home against Waukon. Waukon coach Ted Snitker says they need to slow down Union quarterback Jay Scheel. He says you try to slow him down as they have great athletes up front to help him out.

These teams met back in week six and Union came away with a 34-33 victory. He says everyone will change things around a little, and he says they may be able to change some things and play better this time.

Radio Iowa’s Football Friday Night will have a special playoff edition tonight with all the scores beginning at 10 p.m. Listen on your local Radio Iowa station or onlin at RadioIowa.com.
