Ankeny teens say their parents kept them locked in basement

November 8, 2012 By Matt Kelley

Two central Iowa teenagers claim they were held captive for weeks in the basement of their house by their parents. Reports say a Des Moines-area couple is charged after their two adopted children allege they were locked in the basement as punishment for nearly a month.

Forty-five-year-old Paul Drake, of Ankeny, and his 44-year-old wife JoAnn are facing neglect and false imprisonment charges. The Drakes were arrested Wednesday. Their daughter and son, ages 13 and 14, say they were only allowed out to go to school and were fed their meals under the cellar door.

State DHS officials reportedly learned of the case in September after one of the children told an adult at school.
