Newell-Fonda, Marquette win opening games at girls tourney

February 25, 2013 By Todd Kimm

Second ranked Newell-Fonda took command by outscoring Villisca 29-4 in the second quarter enroute to a 75-28 victory in the opening game at the Girls State Basketball Tournament.

Newell-Fonda coach Dick Jungers says depth is a major strength for his team.

Jill Vanderhoof led Villisca with 11 points as the Blue Jays end the season with a record of 21-5. It was the final girls basketball game for the school which is closing at the end of the school year to merge with Corning.

Danielle Bender scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Bellevue Marquette edged fourth rated AR-WE-VA 65-57 in overtime in a 1A quarterfinal.

It was a measure of revenge for Marquette which lost to AR-WE-VA at the state tournament in 2011.

Paige Danner had 22 points to lead AR-WE-VA.
