Hawkeyes open spring football hoping to turn around 4-8 season

March 27, 2013 By Todd Kimm

Spring football begins at the University of Iowa where the Hawkeyes are hoping to rebound from last year’s 4-8 record. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says, “I mean everybody was disappointed last year, I think everybody was disappointed and probably at time frustrated. And I would emphasize nobody more so than the players, they’re the ones work harder than anybody.”

He says 4-8 is never their goal, and says they all take ownership for the poor season. Ferentz says he told the team in November that they have to flip the calendar and have a new opportunity with a new season. The most publicized position battle will be at quarterback where the Hawks must replace James Vandenberg but it won’t be the only one.

“Every position is open right now, you would think some of the veteran guys, hopefully they’ve improved and they should be able to hold their ground and earn their positions back,” Ferentz says. “Basically every position is open and you’ve got a lot of levels of competition going on.”

Iowa closes out spring drills with a scrimmage on April 27th.
