Iowa Conference softball tourney pushed back to Friday by weather

May 1, 2013 By Todd Kimm

The Iowa Conference softball Tournament is moving back a day. The tournament was to have opened Thursday morning at Coe College in Cedar Rapids but is being moved due to an expected mix of rain and snow.

Central coach George Wares says they still have plenty of time to get things ready, and if things get bumped back again, then they would probably move to a single elimination format. The Dutch tied with Coe for the regular season championship and are seeded second in the six team field.

Wares says the tournament must be done by 6:00 p.m. on Sunday so the NCAA can set the regional pairings. He says if they start games at noon, then they still have time to get 3 games in by 6 p.m. Wares says the one thing that could happen is that a 4 o’clock game starts and then the game would become official if it went until 6 p.m.

Wares says having the weather impact the conference tournament is a perfect way to close out the season. “It’s been bizarre to say the least, you know when you are talking some light snow chances and you’re in May, it’s just kind of the way it has been,” Wares says. He says it’s amazing they have gotten all of their games in.

Wares says he’s seen about all there is to see with weather, and this year may top them all. Central will open against the winner of the game between Simpson and Dubuque.

Coe will play the winner of the Luther/Buena Vista matchup.
