Davenport police release name of victim in fatal fight

June 17, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Davenport police have released the name of a man who died last week following a fight at the city-owned ballpark. He is 45-year-old Douglas R. Whalen of Davenport.

Officers were called to Modern Woodmen Park a little after 10 last Thursday night on the report of a disturbance. They found Whalen on the ground bleeding from the head. He was taken to a Davenport hospital then transferred to Iowa City, where he died Friday.

An autopsy is being conducted. In the meantime, police have charged 50-year-old Joseph VanHecke of Davenport with disorderly conduct by fighting. He was released from the Scott County Jail after posting a $300 cash bond.
