Students from 60 Iowa schools compete in “Teen Safe Driver’s Week” (audio)

October 23, 2013 By Pat Curtis

More than 60 Iowa school districts are taking part in a national contest as part of “Teen Safe Driver’s Week” and one district in eastern Iowa is among the top competitors for a large chunk of cash and a visit from an American Idol winner.

Epworth Western Dubuque Principal Dave Hoeger says the contest is sponsored by State Farm Insurance. “They’re encouraging teens and adults to commit to driving safely,” Hoeger says.

Participants can “commit” to safe driving at www.celebratemydrive.com. The contest ends on Saturday and Epworth Western Dubuque is in a tight race with a much bigger district in Danbury, Connecticut for the lead in the “large school” category.

As of Tuesday, Danbury was in first place, slightly ahead of Western Dubuque. The top five finishers in both the “small” and “large” school categories will receive $100,000 for their school. The next 45 win $25,000.

The two schools that post the most “commitments,” in addition to $100,000, will win a concert by Kelly Clarkson at their school. Over 3,000 school districts across the country are entered in the competition.
