Classes canceled at Algona High School after body found

November 1, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

UPDATE:
Algona Police chief Curt Schipper identified the dead individual as 23-year-old Shane Lee Ballenger of Algona. Police  believe Ballenger died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, Schipper says final cause of death is yet to be determined as they await results of a pathology test performed at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Original story:

Classes at Algona High School were canceled today after the discovery of a body on the school campus early this morning. A 9-1-1 call shortly before 1:30 this morning tipped police off to suspicious activity at the high school.

Algona’s police chief says the body of a 23-year-old Algona man who had been a student at the school was found on school grounds. Authorities say foul play is not suspected and details of the case will likely be released this afternoon.
