Man shot by state trooper after western Iowa chase

December 2, 2013 By Pat Curtis

A man who was driving a stolen SUV was shot by a state trooper in western Iowa on Sunday. Sergeant Scott Bright, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, says the incident began around 7 a.m. as the trooper tried to pull the vehicle over in Council Bluffs.

A chase ensued, with speeds reaching up to 100 miles-an-hour. “After pursuing it for so long, the individual decided to stop. The trooper started to approach the vehicle and that’s when the subject tried to hit the trooper with his vehicle,” Bright said.

The trooper fired – hitting the suspect, who’s hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The trooper was not injured. According to Bright, the suspect had a suspended license and a warrant out for his arrest. “He was eluding the officer for a reason,” Bright said. “He was wanted and was not supposed to be driving.”

The names of the trooper and the suspect have not been released.
