A Fort Dodge family is homeless following an early morning fire today. The Fort Dodge Fire Department was called to a home on the city’s north side at about 1:30 this morning. The fire started in the basement of the home with flames spreading to the entire residence.

Firemen battled the blaze with wind chills hovering around 40 below zero. Fort Dodge Fire Chief Kent Hulett said there were two people injured. One was a family member and the other was a Fort Dodge firefighter. They were both transported to a Fort Dodge hospital. The fireman was treated and released while the family member suffered minor injuries.

The name of the family who lost their home and the injured firefighter have not been released. Chief Hulett said the cause of the fire is not known. The home has been declared a total loss.
