Loras women getting closer to conference title

February 6, 2014 By Todd Kimm

The Loras College women’s basketball team is closing in on its first Iowa Conference Championship since 2003. The Duhawks improved to 9-0 in the league race on Wednesday night with a victory over Luther. Coach Justin Heinzen’s team has not lost since finishing a challenging non conference schedule with a record of 5-6.

“We haven’t lost to a team that hasn’t been ranked in the top 25 all year, so our nonconference schedule has been brutal,” Heinzen says. He says that tough schedule allowed the team to grow up quickly.

Katie Langmeier is having a banner senior season for the Duhawks. Known as a defensive stopper Langmeier is averaging more than 14 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding by averaging nine per game. Heinzen says she gets some “garbage points,” but has refined her game and is able to score more while usually guarding the other team’s best player.

Loras has a two game lead over second place Simpson with five to play but Heinzen says the key for his team is to keep improving as he says they are 4 or 5 possessions away from being .500 in the league and realize they need to work to get better.

Loras returns to action on Saturday by hosting Wartburg.
