Department for the Blind marks 50th ‘White Cane Safety Day’

October 14, 2014 By Radio Iowa Contributor

This year marks the 50th anniversary of White Cane Safety Day, which recognizes the symbol of blind people and ultimately, their independence. An open house is planned tomorrow in Des Moines at the Iowa Department for the Blind, where Rick Dressler is spokesman.

“It’s a mix of a celebration and we’re also recognizing that October is National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month,” Dressler says. “Part of our program that we’re having will be about employment of the blind.”

There will be speakers, music and a panel discussion featuring former and current clients of the department examining successful employment outcomes for the blind. Learn more at: www.idbonline.org
