Fire and explosion under investigation at Sioux County hog facility

January 20, 2015 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Fire-truckThe State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate a fire Friday and a separate accident that injured an employee at a hog confinement facility in Sioux County Monday. Thirty-four-year-old Scott Mulder of Boyden was unloading a feeder in a hog building when an explosion occurred near a pit area of the building.

Mulder sustained serious injuries and was transported by the Boyden Ambulance to the Sioux Center hospital. He was later flown to a burn unit in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Last Friday, fire destroyed much of the hog confinement building causing over $200,000 in damage. The building was empty at the time of both incidents, and no animal were killed.
