A World War I era hand grenade was found in an Iowa City home Tuesday. Police were called to a home where the residents had discovered the grenade in a storage area and they were unsure if it was live or a replica.

The Johnson County Metro Bomb Team took the hand grenade out and set it off under controlled conditions, determining it was live. Police believe the grenade was the souvenir of a World War I veteran that was stored away back in the 1970’s and had not been touched until now.
