Newton bowling alley closes, future unknown

May 15, 2015 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Cardnial-Lanes-logoThe future of the Cardinal Lanes bowling alley in Newton is unknown as the facility shuts down today. When and if the bowling alley reopens is up in the air. The property went through foreclosure and is scheduled to be sold at a Sheriff’s sale next Tuesday.

Operators Jeff and Bev Van Blair say they were able to weather the up’s and down’s of the business for over 34 years. They were also instrumental in establishing bowling as a varsity sport for boys and girls at Newton High School, providing the lanes to the teams for practice and meets for free. Bev Van Blair says it’s important for young people to continue to bowl.

Newton High School activities director, Scott Garvis, says if Cardinal Lanes does not reopen, the boys and girls teams will move their practices and meets to Mustang Lanes in Monroe.
