Cedar Rapids police shoot and kill suspect in drug investigation

Police car lightsThe Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is reviewing the fatal shooting of a man by Cedar Rapids police Tuesday.

Cedar Rapids officers stopped a vehicle around 10:30 p.m. with three people in it who were believed to be involved in an ongoing drug investigation.

One person fled on foot and two officers and a police dog began a search. The found the male suspect one block away from the traffic stop, and officers say he shot at them. They returned fire and killed him.

The officers and police dog escaped injury. The name of the person killed is not being released until relatives are notified. The names of the other two suspects are not being released until they are interviewed.

The two officers are on paid administrative leave while the DCI investigates the shooting.
