While Iowans are busy filling out brackets for the NCAA basketball tournament, which starts today, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is inviting residents to fill out another kind of bracket.

At this time of so-called March Madness, the DNR’s Jesse Brown says the agency is launching its own Park Madness.

“We thought we would have some fun with people having brackets on the brain,” Brown says. “We’ll have people vote for their favorite parks in their part of the state or maybe ones they really like to travel to. As we move through the bracket and get toward the end, people have a chance to win two nights of free camping at our championship park.”

The DNR’s contest begins today and will run parallel to the basketball tournament. “We’ll have the state split into four regions and you go vote for your favorite park in each of those regions,” Brown says. “We’ll take the four winners from those and then next week, on the 24th, we’ll have the semi-finals where you vote for your top two. Then on April 4th, we’ll have our championship game where people pick between our top two east and west parks.”

People who leave a comment on the April 4th championship post on the Iowa DNR’s Facebook page will automatically be entered in the drawing for the free camping.
