The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team closed its home season with a much needed win. The Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take command in a 5-1 victory over Michigan State.

Senior Calvin Mathews was one of three Iowa pitchers who combined to limit the Spartans to five hits.

“I am really happy for Calvin on senior day”, said Iowa coach Rick Heller. He has been such a vital part of the program the last four years and to see him go out and have success his last time on the mound made us feel really good.”

Mathews retired the first 11 batters he faced before issuing a walk and allowing a fourth-inning single. He turned it over to senior Ryan Erickson, who went four innings to pick up his second win. The southpaw allowed one run on three hits and fanned two.

Freshman Zach Daniels got the final four outs to close out the game. It was his fourth save of the season.

Iowa is 10-11 in the Big Ten and finishes with a series at Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 11-10 and tied with Maryland for the final spot in the Big Ten Tournament.
