Fire damaged an apartment complex in Ames.

Fire swept through a large, three-story apartment building in Ames early this morning.

As many as 80 residents, most of them Iowa State University students, were evacuated from the Oak Ridge complex after the fire alarms first started sounding around 4 A.M.

Some residents had to be rescued from balconies, as the flames spread through the hallways, though no injuries are reported.

Damage to the building was heavy. One report says all of the tenants

at Oak Ridge were required to buy renters insurance before they moved in.

There’s no word yet on the fire’s possible cause.
