Bike rider dies after going off bridge on Clive trail

June 24, 2016 By Dar Danielson

Police car lightsClive police have identified a bicyclist who died after driving off a bridge on a city trail Thursday. Police say 35-year-old Adam Grant Pritchard of Torquay, Devon, United Kingdom was visiting family in the Des Moines area.

A news released from the department says it appears that Pritchard lost control of his bicycle as he was westbound on the Clive Greenbelt Trail and approached a wooden bridge. He veered off the trail where he dropped about 8 feet onto the rocks and into the creek.

Someone on the trail saw a body lying in the creek around 2:15 and called police. Emergency personnel closed down the trail and about 20 minutes after they arrived, officers were approached by a 12-year-old girl looking for her brother. She said that she was riding with her adult brother. They had become separated as he rode out ahead of her. She gave officers a description of her brother, which matched the description of Pritchard.

The cause of his death remains under investigation by the Polk County Medical Examiner’s office.
