Convicted murders in death of Marshalltown woman resentenced

July 26, 2016 By Matt Kelley

GavelThree men, who were all 15 years old when they killed a central Iowa woman, have been resentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole.

Jason Speaks and brothers Burt and Derek Smith were convicted of first-degree murder 22 years ago and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing Rebecca Hauser of Marshalltown on October 4, 1994. Another boy pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to 75 years in prison.

Prosecutors said the Kirksville, Missouri teens posed police officers and pulled Hauser over on a Marshall County road. They robbed her and then shot and stabbed Hauser. Their resentencing on Monday follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling which banned mandatory life-without-parole sentences for those under the age of 18.
